Favorite This20 in 30: Skeetones - 1100

Published: August 22, 2011

For the past six months, Cincinnati's Skeetones have been steadily increasing their hold on the Midwest livetronica scene, appearing at countless festivals like Rootwire and the forthcoming Big Pig Music Festival. During that time, they released a full-length album, Retrospektive, as well as a follow-up featuring live-PA versions, remixes, and rarities from the album and beyond. Everyone at The Untz holds a special place in their hearts for live electronic music, and TheUntz.com 2011 Digital Music Sampler would be a mighty sad collection without Skeetones in the 7-spot.

Skeetones' contribution to the sampler, "1100," is deceptively simple. A four-chord organ pattern provides an introductory fanfare, which is followed up by a barrage of live drums. This fill brings that organic percussion to the forefront, a key element in the Skeetones live show, which is why the band is garnering fans by the bucketload. That hook-laden groove continues throughout the track, echoing towards a climax that gains even more intensity from hip-hop samples and increasingly violent wobbles. Look out.
