Following a massive summer which saw Ott headlining east coast transformational darling Kinnection and supporting Tipper at the legendary Red Rocks, the British producer today announces that his fourth studio album will be coming out August 11, and there is a massive US fall tour on the horizon. The album is the byproduct of a wildly successful Kickstarter project, which saw the ex-Twisted Records artist holed up in his studio for much of the past year.
Today's premiere, in Ott's words, "isn’t particularly representative of the rest of the album," but he likes it, and more importantly, it advances the narrative he has laid out over the course of his career. "Harwell Dekatron" is named for a two-ton mid-century computing machine that ran on gas tubes and spewed printer tape. Ott's steampunk approach to production, which involves spooling miles of cables through analog synths until these very modern compositions are rent from ancient machines, really captures the artisinal aesthetic of today's discerning audiences, and cements Ott's sound, which is very much planted in both the future and the past.
Angular bleeps and bloops bounce off one another in "Harwell," which utilizes the latest in glitchy percussive schema, but engages the anachronistic character of Ott's repertoire with very retro synths and machine tone from bygone days. Throw in the sounds of Bangalore, where the epicenter of technological advancement now lies (or at least where your call is directed when your Android is fried), and the tongue-in-cheek wit of Ott is preserved.
To celebrate the forthcoming release of the as-yet-untitled album, Ott will be performing alongside Kaminanda and Templo at the Mishiwaka Amphitheater in Bellvue, CO on August 14 (we're giving fans a chance to win two tickets to this one). The album release tour then kicks off in earnest in late September with Plantrae and Aligning Minds.
