The last time we heard a modern take on Nina Simone’s jazzy 1965 rendition of “Feeling Good,” the RZA was slowing the track down for Kanye West and Jay Z’s sizable Watch the Throne project. Next in line to take a stab at the uplifting classic is Bassnectar, who tastefully amps the volume for a great spin on the original. Generally one for pounding bass and massive sound, Bassnectar is tame here. Leaving much of Simone’s original work in tact, the producer injects the perfect amount of 808 and bounce to accompany the brass section that was so signature to the 1965 version. The remix comes as part of the upcoming Verve Remixed: The First Ladies compilation (out July 9th) in which producers ranging from Pretty Lights to Toro y Moi give modern takes on female jazz classics.
