After launching his new record label imprint Liquid Amber a little over a year ago, DJ Shadow has remained out of sight for the most part—until last week, when he dropped off a massive track titled “Swerve.”
Not only has the instrumental hip-hop legend managed to push genre boundaries throughout his extensive career, but beyond that, he helped shape dance music culture of the early 2000’s.
It’s refreshing to see an artist with deep roots in one genre begin to craft a new sound, all while staying true to his originality. “Swerve” uses various minimalist approaches, a hard-hitting drum pattern and a few trap-style elements that together make for an ultimate end-of-the-year banger.
This new side of DJ Shadow has us interested for what the New Year will bring. Especially after months in the studio, we know it will be worth the wait.
