Portland-based Autonomous Music is a management firm and booking agency with a very specific goal – to use music and performance as tools for social change.
With that goal in mind, the Autonomous Music team only works with artists who share their desire to provide experiences that are “empowering, political, unifying, conscious, educational, positive, and revolutionary,” according to its website. The firm represents a diverse and eclectic range of electronic acts, including trip-hop producer Emancipator, ambient aficionado Random Rab, producers Blutech and KiloWatts – and the duo’s collaborative project, Invisible Allies.
Since its 2008 launch, Autonomous Music has been going above and beyond the management agency norm. For one, the team hosts The Art of Dismantling, a monthly interview series that features artists, musicians, and writers who use their creative abilities to inspire political and social change. Last year, Autonomous Music also released In Defense: Vol. 1 – its first compilation album in a planned series of compilations, which will benefit different nonprofits. All profits from the first ‘In Defense’ album went to the Civil Liberties Defense Center.
Autonomous Music and the artists it represents are steadily proving to the electronic music scene that great music can affect more than just the individual fan – it can contribute to the bigger picture and improve tomorrow’s world today.
