What in the actual fuck?
We'll get back to the mindfuck that is this song in a second, but I guess I should start at the beginning.
Gravitas Recordings, the label behind Zebbler Encanti Experience's most outrageous endeavors, including “Inner G,” which found its way onto Bassnectar's top set lists last summer, gave ZEE the keys to the castle and asked Ben “Encanti” Cantil and Peter “Zebbler” Berdovsky to curate an entire compilation of psytrap featuring some of their favorite artists blazing new trails in the field.
The result is the jaw-dropping 17 track comp, Infinity Mirrors, that features Au5, Moniker, Kermode, Ryanosaurus, Cualli, Djank Yucca, and even a ZEE flip of RUN DMT, and Tron Sepia's “Inner G” remix contest winning submission. This is such a rowdy crew of talented producers pushing way past any contemporary boundaries of standard sonic aesthetics.
Which brings us back to the lead track, “Sobek,” a collaboration with Ananaki (who also contributes a solo tune to the compilation). Sure, “psytrap” is trippy elements in a trap tune, but these guys took that all the way to its logical conclusion and infused it with a bawdy runs of actual psytrance, which then explode into these absolutely insane drops that are so mind-bogglingly disorienting, you don't know which way is up, down, or sideways.
Truly some spectacular innovation here, but have no fear, this tune, and the rest of them are still danceable as fuck. This kind of fearless experimentation will be coveted and stolen piecemeal by bigger acts, but you and I both know where these bizarre, otherwordly sounds originated. We are eagerly awaiting next week's drop, straining to see which of tomorrow's stars leap into the more mainstream consciousness over the next few months.
Pre-order Infinity Mirrors ahead of its November 14 release!
