Wick-it the Instigator: The Weathermaker EP Review

As today’s bass culture continues to progress, it has become evident that artists stemming originally from genres all across the board are leaving their respective scenes for the greener pastures of EDM.
One explosive example of this phenomenon is seen in the musical career of Wick-it the Instigator. Nashville’s Andrew Owsley has been producing and performing since 2004, but originally found his roots in the art of turntablism and hip-hop. Although over the last few years he has been carefully crafting a distinctive sound that is incredibly creative and often riddled with samples galore, he is best known for his massive Quentin Tarantino opus Grindhouse Basterds, and phenomenal revamps of artists like Figure, Dr.Dre, and Michael Jackson.
On The Weathermaker EP, Wick-it bounces out a series of monumental original cuts that demonstrate a whole new edge to his production capabilities while still fitting with his overall goal of making music, and that is to rock the crowd till they can be rocked no more.
Opening up the release is the title track, which strikes with the captivating roar of thunder and a series of low bass tones that eventually transition into a slew of bubbly soundcapes. Soon enough we are hit with the classic Snoop Dogg line “Twist another sweet and bob to the beat,” which will quickly get the party started.
“Grey Sky” is an ominous slow jam that contains jazzy instrumentations, friendly dub lines, and the mesmerizing vocals of Heather Jones that together create an incredibly memorable and addicting song.
“Gucci Gurl” kicks off with vocal samples from Gucci Mane and an unlimited supply of serotonin heightening synth lines, while “A Better Place” is a fast paced monster of a tune that will have audiences tearing up any dance floor.
Closing up the release is “Slanky,” which is a vocal infused masterpiece of a song containing slow dub lines layered in between immersive string samples.
The Weathermaker is an adventurous, bass-fueled journey that will please any longtime fan of Wick-it with its confident synth lines and eclectic vocal samples.
