Lots of shit happens each week, so it's our job to shovel it into a pile, polish it up, and present it to you, so you're on top of everything. We don't want you looking dumb in front of your friends, after all. Don't be a sad Skrillex, like this guy to your left.
This week, The Glitch Mob made all that waiting worth it, Deadmau5 prepares to individually text message all 8 million of his fans, ULTRA unveiled its 16th lineup (Phase 1, at least), and our buddies on the Liberated label made a BIG splash in Colorado. Now you'll be in the know, and you won't sound like a dummy when you're making chit-chat at the office Christmas party this weekend.
The Glitch Mob is BACK (almost)
Amid anticipation that the entire new album from The Glitch Mob was dropping, fans were teased with lead single "Can't Kill Us," a giant, stormy, and altogether triumphant return to the spotlight for the bass-heavy trio. Pre-orders of the new album, Love Death Immortality, are available now, and the single is automatically downloaded with each order. The threesome also unveiled it's March tour dates, which will follow the February 11th release of the album (finally!!). We'll continue to wait patiently.
ULTRA reveals Phase 1 Lineup
The world's premier EDM event, Ultra Music Festival, revealed its Phase 1 lineup earlier this week. Unsurprisingly, house, techno, and trance once again dominated the bill, with the return of artists like Avicii, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Afrojack, Carl Cox, Kaskade, and Hardwell. Trap and interestingly, rap made in-roads into the festival with artists like M.I.A., Waka Flocka, and RiFF RaFF joining the expected ranks of Dillon Francis, Flosstradamus, Just Blaze, and Carnage. Ultra is back to a single weekend festival, after a dual week experiment last year. This is the 16th incarnation of the festival, which returns to Bayfront Park in Miami, FL on March 28-30th, 2014. VIP tickets are sold out, and only a few remaining GA passes can be found at ultramusicfestival.com.
Bingo Players' Paul Baumer passes away
The EDM community was shocked this week by the news of the passing of Paul Baumer, one-half of famed Dutch DJ duo Bingo Players. Baumer was diagnosed with cancer this past summer, and eventually succumbed to the disease on December 17th. Well wishes and condolences flew across the internet from superstar DJs and fans alike, as the hashtag "RIP PAUL" trended on Twitter. Bingo Players has canceled its remaining 2013 gigs.
Texting with Deadmau5?
Today, Deadmau5 announced the launch of his new website live.deadmau5.com. "Suckscribers" (his words, not ours) will have access to unreleased content, streaming events, and other such bonuses, along with a fan forum dubbed "MSG BOREDS." Also, for those willing to pay about 5 bucks a month, or just under 50 bucks for the year, you could possibly get the chance to "live chat" with Joel Zimmerman, though we're unclear how rewarding that might be. It sounds like a couple of people are selected randomly throughout the year to interact with Mr. Mau5.
The Floozies & Manic Focus sell out a Colorado double-dip
Even though this intrepid reporter was LOCKED OUT of the Denver show, we at The Untz are thrilled that The Floozies and Manic Focus sold out not only the Bluebird Theater show, but also The Fox in Boulder, CO this past weekend. Billed as a Liberated Music showcase (GRiZ's brand new label), the second show featured an epic jam with both acts, as well as a surprise appearance from Dom of Big Gigantic. Kudos to these rising stars, who are certainly making a statement where it counts! Onwards and upwards...
Sugarpill & Gladkill start new label; so do Jantsen & Dirt Monkey
Two pairs of friends in the industry have announced they are joining forces for good (and possibly some evil). Sugarpill and Gladkill, who have often worked side-by-side in the ranks of the Headtron faithful are joining forces to form Foundations Recordings. Also, we've learned Jantsen and Dirt Monkey are creating Kairos Audio, and their first "freaky" collab already wound up on Skream and Benga's radio show. We'll be watching both fledgling labels like hawks for new releases!
Other sh*t you missed this week.
