When it comes to swaggering subsonic juggernauts of the bass music industry, it's hard to deny Firepower Records' spot at the top of the heap. Datsik's label has been responsible for churning out some of the filthiest releases from superstars of the scene, but also for discovering the hottest new talent from around the planet. And that's been the focus of the labels' Flatline compilation series: pair titans of the bass world with newcomers chomping at the bit to prove their mettle, and give the fans what they want.
Flatline Vol 3 features rising stars Jarvis, Krimer, and Zetta & 12th Hour. While Jarvis has made himself known to the Firepower community through his hellraising remix of Datsik's "Katana," the rest of the release is filled with newbies. But we scored ourselves the hottest selection from the EP, which features two of the most prominent members of the Firepower family.
Protohype and PhaseOne revisit one of the label's most iconic releases, the massive banger "Recon," which dropped last summer on another bananas compilation, Shellshock Legends. Max and Graeme took a page from the wonky world of underground, minimalist dubstep, and injected a little off-kilter riddim play into this VIP. The result is a vicious, snarling tune that packs even more of a punch than the original (if you could even fathom that's possible).
As always, the American and the Aussie don't disappoint bass junkies seeking that new sound. These elder statesmen of the scene (though they are young prodigies, themselves) are setting a high bar for the label's new talent. Snag this EP from Firepower on March 4th.
