Far out ahead of the house resurgence, Russ Davies continues to push the creative envelope on the more cerebral side of the dance music scene. The latest single from his ABAKUS project is in the chill midtempo breaks realm, hearkening back to the IDM of the late 90's.
In "The Beginning," subtle melodies spill over an effervescent drum line. The delicate synthwork is a hallmark of Davies' signature instrumental work. The ABAKUS aesthetic has always been about tweaking the emotional quotient. No big blaring bass necessary, he can change your outlook with the twist of a knob.
B-side "Dreamer" has a familiar, retro aesthetic, playing in that same IDM vein. Light, palm-muted guitar lazily floats in and out of the hypnotic groove. With a nod to the rave scene, quintessential "trippy" vocal samples line the breaks.
This single paves the way for a new ABAKUS album, slated for a spring/summer release. His Cinnamon Chasers moniker also sees a March 2015 release of Great Escape.
