Favorite ThisBeats Antique - A Thousand Faces: Act I review

If you’re at all familiar with Beats Antique, then you're well aware that the trio comprised of Zoe Jakes, Sidecar Tommy, and David Satori, craft an intriguing experience that entices all senses, with the incorporation of traditional gypsy music, experimental electronica, and mind-boggling performance. Their new concept album portrays the same electo-gypsy vibe for which the trio is notorious, with an even more theatrical approach than some of their previously recorded work. The dynamic A Thousand Faces – Act 1 recreates the experience of a circus performance from the comfort of your own speakers.

The concept album surprisingly, yet brilliantly, opens out with a bit more glitch and less gypsy sound than I expected with “Overture”; demonstrating just how versatile the trio can be. “Kismat “(feat Alam Khan) quickly brings back the deeply sensual gypsy vibe the trio has evoked with trantric tempo, gorgeous gongs, and flawless violin.

“Door of Destiny” is my favorite track on the album as it radiates a delightfully hallucinogenic circus vibe. The track is a psychedelic masterpiece; a wonderful clash of trippy sounds - from game show clips, bassy glitch and circus music. “Door of Destiny” actually reminds me of one of my favorite trippy classics “For the Benefit of Mr. Kite” by The Beatles, with Beats Antique’s addition of a new age, even more experimental feel. Much like the Beatles track, “Door of Destiny” is a kaleidoscopic experience in a song.

“A Thousand Faces” continues on through striking tracks like “Charon’s Crossing” with deep chimes that pull at the heart strings and tempos that are played with in an experimental, yet polished manner. “Pandora’s Box” shines with basstastic whomp splendor that is brilliantly juxtaposed with gorgeous chimes that resemble a wind-up ballerina box. “Veil of Tears” executes a flawless ending to the concept album with exotic chants, claps and sweet melody.

If you haven’t gotten the opportunity to experience A Thousand Faces: Act 1, then it's definitely time to entice your ears and imagination. The album should have you absolutely dying for the A Thousand Faces Tour to come to your town, so that you can witness the entire experience.
