The Colorado sound is rich and varied, but few artists really represent that aesthetic better than Bass Physics. The high-flying live duo of A.P. Adair and Luke Sims is taking electro-soul to the next level with live keyboard and guitar, and crafting a chiller vibe to go along with its rabid fan base.
Having just completed a massive, 30+ date nationwide tour with Phutureprimitive, the duo is now road-tested, and taking its tight stage show to the next level, creating a dance sensation wherever they go. And where are they going in 2016? Why they're headed to The Untz Festival in Mariposa, CA from June 2-4.
I got a chance to chat with Adair and Sims about what brought the pair together, what to expect from the tour-tested live show, and which Colorado family the boys are stoked to see at The Untz Festival. Make sure to check out the stunning tunes these guys have crafted while reading the interview. They've got such a silky sound that it demands your attention.
Let's dig into your origin story. What brought you two together, and more importantly, how did you develop the idea for a live electro-soul duo?
We came together in a music production class in high school, we made our first track and knew this was something we had to continue. It was never really planned out, it just kind of divinely came together through our love of creating music.
It's evident you prefer to craft your own original tunes, since you have such a strong signature sound, but what does it take for you two to decide "Yes, we have to remix that song."
Anything that sparks an interest and says, "whoa, that is a cool idea" can cause us to remix a song. From taking an already amazing song and putting our own twist on it, or just sampling a portion of a song to add to another, we try not to have limits on our creativity.
How does the songwriting process work? Do you guys start with the live instruments and jamming songs into being there, or start on the computer? Or have you gone both ways?
The process is without bounds and comes from both sides. Sometimes one of us will write an entire song and the other will simply clean it up, other times we write songs entirely together. We always aim for the best product without putting limits on our creative side. For me, most of my ideas come from chord progressions and ideas that I write on my piano or guitar.
What can fans who have never seen Bass Physics before expect from your set at The Untz Festival?
High-energy smiles and heavy guitar/keyboard solos over hard-hitting bass and hip-hop beats. We get the dance floor jumpin!
Who are some of the artists on The Untz Festival that you're excited to see, yourself? I know there are a lot of Colorado homies on the bill.
As we just got off of a 36 show tour with Phutureprimitive, we already cry ourselves to sleep without seeing him every night; it will be a pleasure to share a show with him again! Other than Phuture, we have so many friends playing this festival such as Lucid Vision, Turbo Suit, Illenium, Blunt Force, Said the Sky, Project Aspect, Unlimited Gravity, Dynohunter, Marvel Years, and more. It's about to be a party.
