It is nearly that time of year again, kids. That wonderful month of March when masses of music lovers flock to Austin, Texas for a phenomenon known as South by Southwest. They call it a festival when really this thing is more of a city-wide takeover, and from March 12th-17th, live music of all varieties will dominate the streets of downtown and the surrounding areas. Thousands of artists will turn your favorite bars and fish taco joints into venues around every corner. Overwhelmed yet? You should be, but thankfully, you have The Untz to guide you.
Showcases you cannot afford to miss:
AM Only (March 13th-17th @ La Zona Rosa) – the biggest and possibly best electronic music showcase at SXSW. This year’s arsenal features Krewella, 12th Planet, Baauer, Two Fresh and UZ, along with many more. A fresh mix of dubstep, trap and glitch makes this line-up worthwhile and a definite staple of any EDM fan’s SXSW experience. However, this showcase does not require a festival wristband, so be prepared wait in line to gain access. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151475351522264&set=a.420511492263.190514.52364797263&type=1&theater
Headtron Nights (March 14th @ Silhouette) – the West Coast bass giant known as Headtron is putting on a showcase featuring only the sexiest music known to the electronic world. Gladkill, Andreilien, NiT GriT and Stephan Jacobs are headlining this one (our fingers are crossed for some Pizza Party action). It is yet to be seen if this event requires a wristband, so keep an eye out for more information. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151461655281248&set=a.211393856247.131822.171022681247&type=1&theater
UKF/SMOG (March 16th @ Roial) – with a combination like UKF and SMOG, how can a dub-head go wrong? The United Kingdom and Los Angeles come together for what is guaranteed to be an absolute banger of a showcase, starring legends 12th Planet, Flinch, SPL, AC Slater, Bare Noize and a few other notable acts from both labels. This showcase is free with a mere RSVP. http://do512.com/c/sx2013/event/2013/03/16/smog-vs-ukf
Other Noteworthy Shows & Venues:
Barcelona on E. 6th Street – Austin’s underground bass haven. This venue alone will feature Skreamizm, Sub.Mission Denver, Play Me Records and Surefire Agency showcases. As a rule of thumb, any event going down at this venue is worth checking out. http://www.facebook.com/events/114436985401405/?fref=ts
The ILLMORE – think of it as the sickest house party you’ve ever been to, only if all of your favorite music artists attended. Austin based promotion company ScoreMore and hip-hop blog Illroots grabbed Sony as a sponsor back in 2012 and threw parties that featured Mimosa, Diplo, Steve Aoki, Lil Jon, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller and oh, so many more. This year’s lineup has yet to be announced, but one can only imagine that it is going to be bigger and better. http://theillmore.com/
GRiZ – March 14th @ The Madison
Dillon Francis – March 15th @ Republic Live
Let it also be noted that both Bassnectar and Deadmau5 appearances have been rumored (excuse us…WHAT?!).
If there are any other pieces of SXSW advice that we can offer, take these to heart: wear comfortable walking shoes, stay on top of your Twitter game for last second announcements, and RSVP for every event you can find.
