Perhaps it is named for the resort island off the coast of Southern California, known for its elegance, stoic solitude, and wine mixers. Perhaps, though, it is named for the creamy deliciousness of this Untz writer's favorite salad accessory. Crisp, tangy, and oh so rich.
The exclusive new cut from
Russ Liquid, "Catalina," bridges the crevasse between glitch-hop and the beat scene. Lopsided beats abut revolving bass loops. Pitch-shifted slices of vocals pierce the quiet majesty. A faraway, lonesome alto sax creeps onto the scene about two-thirds into the cut. A jazz man and multi-instrumentalist by trade, Liquid utilizes his firm grasp on theory to weave in and out of modal transitions his button-pushing contemporaries wouldn't dare touch. Sultry and mournful, "Catalina" is an analog love song in a digital world. And yeah, it's gotta be about the dressing.
Catch Russ Liquid in Portland, OR this weekend, before he hits the friendly skies, first heading to Envision Festival in Costa Rica, a spring circuit in Australia, and a full slate of summer festivals .
