Attention! Well, another weekend brings another festival. This Friday and Saturday I’ll be kicking around western Ohio at the inaugural Blastoff Festival! As usual, I figured I’d give you all taste of what’s to come this weekend, but also, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter (@Nattymorrison) as well as The Untz (@TheUntz) so we can live chat and to hear my inane ramblings on all things electronic music! As you were…
1. “Live on Arrival” - GRiZ
This intense electro cut captures the feel of heading out for a night on the town, but amps it up with glitch, grime, disco-step and whatever else floats through the mind of this talented young producer. It’s like a Double Stuffed Oreo, or a super filled-up Twinkee (insert Ghostbusters reference here.)
2. “Owning the Weather” - Jaws That Bite (ft. Grillo)
As many of you probably know, I love making up genres of electronic music. It’s so easy, all I do is come up with an adjective fitting of the sound, and then attach “-step” to the end. I would call this Detroit native’s music gloriousmess-step. It’s like a wonderful abstract painting or a Chicago style pizza. Mmm, gluttonous-step.
3. “Universal Shift” - Duktap
This Kalamazoo DJ files this cut under “Salami.” Sounds about right; it’s full of flavor, has a long shelf life and tastes great with yellow mustard. No wait, that last one doesn’t work.
4. “Truckin’” - Freddy Todd
Considering the summer music festival scene has moved in a decidedly electronic direction, there’s something vaguely ironic about appropriating O.G. jam band The Grateful Dead’s iconic classic and turning it into a futuristic whomp workout.
5. “Cryogenic Dreams” - Phutureprimitive
Don’t let the name fool you, this is all future stuff. Lush as lush gets, with incredible drum breaks and insane production skills. If you haven’t heard of Rain, aka Phutureprimitive, you need to be stalking his Soundcloud. Now.
