As September 13th release date for the eponymous third studio album from Lotus creeps closer, the live electronic powerhouse has released its first single. Fans of the post-rock/dance quartet are already familiar with "Blacklight Sunflare," but the track plays out slightly differently in the studio. Synths shimmer violently through the opening and coda, echoing trends across the industry, but the cut's highlight is the chill drum 'n' bass breakdown that serves as an ecstatic lull, drawing the energy down in preparation for a ramp up.
With two tracks that did not make the Lotus cut already out ("Destroyer" and "Ridalin"), the release of "Sunflare" still does not provide a clear indication of what the album has in store. Live fan favorites, such as "Molluskunk," will be paired up with a slew of new songs, and it remains difficult to gauge the direction in which the band is headed. One direction we do know is that the band will be headlining two nights at their official unofficial festival Summer Dance, now in its 4th year at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Garretsville, OH. That's followed up by an extensive Fall Tour which takes them coast to coast with supporting act Key N Krates. With the SCI Fidelity release a little less than two months away, Lotus fans will simply have to wait patiently for the results. Or go see a show...
