Krooked Drivers’ new beat tape, “Here and Now,” is truly something magical for electro-soul lovers, hip-hop heads, and instrumental connoisseurs, alike! The dynamic duo released the 30-minute mix on Michal Menert’s newly forged label, Super Best Records. If you don’t know anything about Super Best Records, I sincerely suggest you peep just how far the talent stretches on that label, because it’s an all-star squad of producers and artists who truly propel a movement far exceeding the grasps of EDM. This project by Krooked Drivers is on some #superbest level for composing and beat collaging at its finest.
The drum layering is phenomenal. Each track is diverse with hat and kick play, taking you from soul and jazz back on down to some blues patterns that flood your ears with detailed drum expression that is impressive to a hip-hop beat maker, yet very familiar to the hip-hop fan. Such a chill piece of work to vibe to, yet infused with intricate drum patterns.
What sets KD apart from the rest of the production world, is how they immerse you in soulful samples for an injection of emotion, and then drop in with just a slight taste of stout bass to amplify your beat palettes to some SUPERxBEST level. Maddy O’Neal and Donnie Dalbora both revere J-Dilla and Pete Rock in their style, but I feel their work does their influences justice and much, more with this beat tape.
Donnie told me, “We wanted this tape to flow and give our fans something where one beat stops and another starts, you don’t even realize the tape is almost over. It’s a cruiser tape, like you just got paid on Friday and have a fun night ahead.” This is another special gem from the couple who just keep climbing the boundaries of production, pushing their soulful genius to new levels that attract more and more dedicated listeners.
They have been on an amazing run the last year, with an album release and playing some massive shows and festivals, and right now they are currently on a fresh tour with fellow electro soul child, Marvel Years, and GRiZ’s label-mate, MuzzY from the Liberated crew. The Retro Electro tour, brought to you by TheUntz.com, is going to unleash some soulful vibes and passionate live sets that will give any person in the audience a new respect and appreciation for what Krooked Drivers and the rest of Super Best Records are trying to do. Spirit ignition in full force.
