From high-energy dance to downtempo, Martin Folb, aka MartyParty, is a Brooklyn-based producer (though a native of South Africa) making waves with his own unique sounds, which he has declared ‘purple.’ What exactly is purple? On his website, Folb grabs the definition from UrbanDictionary.com that declares it to be, “an electronic music genre, evolving from dubstep, that tells a story in about 2 minutes or less. Every 8 bars a new layer needs to be introduced with the intention of filling all frequencies with music layers until the final 8 bar chorus completely saturates the listener with sound…purple music should be able to have the beat removed and still remain interesting.”
A quick listen to MartyParty’s tracks demonstrates that his music meets the purple criteria. Among many of his own masterful tracks, Folb features an amped up remix of Adele’s smash-hit “Rolling in the Deep” that manages to make the ballad even more powerful with quick paced violins and heavy, grinding bass during the chorus. Without the beat, it would still serve up a powerful punch as the purple definition demands, but the beat only helps to intensify the track. MartyParty will be performing Saturday July 9th at Bisco and he’s an act not to miss!
