And now for something completely different... Attendees at this past weekend's inaugural Gratifly music festival saw a vision. A delicate, meandering voice and fleeting melody that built, slowly but surely into an orchestral manifestation of swirling colors, darting drums, and soul-quenching majesty. Joshua Penman's Akara project rarely gets its live incarnations due to the sheer difficulty of gathering cellos, violas, accordions, keyboards, various percussive instruments and vocalists all in the same location. But when it comes together, it's a sight and sound to behold. Lucky for us, Akara releases The World Beyond August 5th on Kalya Scintilla's Merkaba Music label. An entire album of exotic incantations anchored by this enormous opus. "The Royal Antechamber" is to be enjoyed in multiple settings in every mood under the sun. It's big, and it's yours. Download it for free in anticipation of Monday's release.
