There are very few musical artists who have touched more people than Bob Marley. You could probably count them on one hand and still have a finger or two left. So when fans heard that the legendary Legend album would be getting a face lift, they were rightly skeptical. However, since this project was curated by Stephen Marley and Jason Bentley, the participants were carefully (and perfectly) chosen. Among these remixers are Beats AntiqueThievery Corporation, and most notably, Pretty Lights.

Last week, Derek Vincent Smith posted on Facebook about the project, saying “It was about making a new version that completely respected the original song, while putting a new twist on it that would assist in continuing the Legacy of Bob Marley.” Let us be the first to tell you what you probably already knew:  Pretty Lights crushed this remix. Smith injects just enough of his Pretty Lights flare into “Exodus” to make it work. It is clear how much work went into this song because it is the shining gem of the album.

Beat Antique’s remix of “Satisfy My Soul” would make Marley smile if he was here today. Beats is particularly great at taking a songs and adding their global sound to make it extraordinary. They are a great fit for this project.  Thievery Corp contributes their futuristic sounds and laid back vibes to their version of “Get Up, Stand Up.” It sounds like Bob Marley jamming on the Moon (and who wouldn’t want to be at THAT show)

What makes Legend: Remixed work so well is the clear respect that the remixers had towards the man they were remixing. None of the versions stray far enough away from the original to get lost in the fringe so the album is still as cohesive as the original. Personally, we think Bob would be proud right now. You can grab the record on June 25th.
