Paul Brandt is going deep. For those expecting a typical Pretty Lights Music release, watch out. The new Paul Basic album, Transient Horizons is brutally bleak, a sort of dystopian beatscape that veers from the sunny electro-soul of some of his contemporaries. Roster mates Pretty Lights and Michal Menert make appearances on "Reach Higher" and "Lost Sight," respectively, pulling in their signature sounds to reflect Basic's thunderous display.
The highlight of the album is "Cloak & Dagger," an inferno of swirling synths and deadly drumbeats. "Last Minute" also bears that heavy soul, but between spitfire beats, we see and hear rays of sunshine. There is a break in the storm clouds. Such a heavy-hitting album begs to be listened to a number of times to really engage the material and dive in. Really a stunning PLM release, can't wait to hear Paul unleash these tunes on new audiences far and wide in 2014.
